How Id You My Computer Get Infected With Antispyware Soft?

By admin Posted in: software

Last night, my Windows XP computer got infected with Antispyware Soft (a fake Antivirus program). I did a System Restore to May 24, 2010. Now it seems that everything is fine.
My question is, how did I get infected? It would be helpful to know so this doesn’t happen again.

Could have piggybacked on something else you downloaded, or come in a drive-by download. Run an antimalware program (I use MSE) to scan your computer, and keep your computer and browser updated.

Downloading programs from untrusted sources (Basically random sites) and going to sites that are untrusted. Get a good Anti-Virus software and a good Browser security program as well as a secure browser.
    Secure browsers would be:
    Firefox (http://firefox.com/)
    Chrome (http://google.com/chrome/)
    Safari (http://www.apple.com/safari/)
    and good anti-viruses would be:
    AVG (http://www.avg.com/us-en/home-and-office…
    Nod32 (http://www.eset.com/search-brand?CMP=KNC…
    Kapersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/)
and a good program for internet security for Firefox or Chrome would be WOT: http://www.mywot.com/
Do not ever use Internet Explorer.

    There are three common ways:
    1) You went to a web site that exploited some security flaw in your browser or some auxiliary program (like flash). All you can do about this is make sure to keep your system up to date.
    2) You went to a web site that tricked you into downloading and installing the malware. Often they pop up a window that says your system has a problem (though it has no idea) and you need to run something to find/fix it. You can help avoid this by staying off questionable web sites and recognizing fake browser windows and closing them immediately.
    3) You downloaded a program intentionally and ran it, and the program installed malware. Yuu can help avoid this by not downloading software from peer-to-peer filesharing sites, not downloading software from other questionable sources, and running good anti-virus/anti-malware programs.

I wouldn’t worry about why it happened…but the point being system restore was the worst thing you could have done…it will be back in a couple of days on your computer…you’ll start getting the pop-ups again…your computer still has all the Fake .exe in them from Antispyware soft…you have to get rid of it…http://www.myantispyware.com/2010/04/15/…

Downloading files from questionable websites, opening spam emails, visiting questionable websites, downloading using P2P programs like Limewire, etc…
The best way to prevent it from happening again is to make sure that your Windows XP has all the latest updates, that you have a good, up to date anti-virus and that you practice safe web-surfing.
Don’t download files from sites that you don’t trust completely, or if you do, scan them after you download them but before you click on them. Some anti-virus programs automatically scan downloaded files for viruses.
You could have gotten rid of Antispyware Soft without resorting to using System Restore. It’s not too complicated, though the instructions seem a little intimidating:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-re…

Here is a list of what I use on my computer to keep it clean and safe (all free!):
avast! – anti-virus (Avira is good as well – do *not* use 2 anti-virus programs)
    MalwareBytes – anti-malware (on-demand only)
    Spybot S&D – anti-spyware (on-demand only)
SuperAntiSpyware – anti-spyware (on demand only)
