Matthew – I answer this question a lot and the real answer is not which one is most needed but which one you are good at and enjoy doing. I regularly run into people who have tried software development/programming and either don’t like it or were just not gifted at it. I think that most deleopers were born and not made. If you are not gifted at it then you can take a boatload of programming courses and you will still not be any good at it.
I would suggest you take some college course in programming and see how you like it. If you love it than there you go – If you don’t then you can go into the system adminstration, networking and hardware areas. Most 4 year colleges will allow you to easily change your major up until your 2nd year is over. So you could switch from Computer Science (CS) and its programming emphasis over to networking with very few credits being lost. I have a Computer Information Systems (CIS) and have worked as a Technical Author, Systems Administrator and Systems Integrator.
    Best Wishes!
