I know that AutoCAD is a great general CAD program for all professions, but why is it still so popular if it can’t do assembly drawings? Most parts made with any model software is only a piece of an assembly of some sort. Name any object and it is made up of more than one part more often then not. AutoCAD can’t do assembly drawings as far as I know, only Inventor does.

The more current versions of AutoCAD have parts that Inventor uses.
AutoCAD was and for the most part still is a drafting tool with additions for calculations. It can be used for many disciplines. The largest user bases are architecture and mechanicals for plan views and dimensioning. It was only after years of development that 3D solids could be drawn easily and in groups to be used as assembly and motion analysis tools. And Inventor has the AutoCAD drafting engine as the basis for its operations.
Have you tried programming acad with their autolisp?
